Get back on the Dancefloor this Saturday
Dancesport lessons are back this Saturday, and we'll be welcoming a bunch of new members to the dancefloor as well as those who took part in previous years. The system's slightly different this year- so I thought i'd explain it in a blog post to make it a bit more clear.
This term our lessons are held on either Tuesday evenings or Saturday afternoons. This allows us to be more flexible for our members- so if you're a fresher this year and you want to try out dancesport, but it happens to clash with, say, fencing on a Tuesday night- you can come to Dancesport lessons on the Saturday! We're hoping that we'll get a great turnout this year and keep improving as a society to help you all have fun learning how to dance.
Lessons work in "sessions". Sessions contain 3 lessons, usually a beginners, an improvers and an advanced. At the start of the year though, we're holding two beginners classes followed by an advanced one. So between 12 and 1 this week we learn beginners Cha Cha (a fun, lively, slightly cheeky latin dance that's great for people who've never danced before), between 1 and 2 we learn beginners waltz (the most recognisable ballroom dance) and then between 2 and 3 we learn advanced samba (tricky and rhythmical- but don't let that put you off if you've danced with us, or with anyone else beforehand!)
To dance you have to be a member, for insurance reasons, so we've made membership really cheap to encourage people to come along. Whereas say, in Leeds Dancesport, you have to pay £20 for membership- here in York you only have to pay £4 AND you get a free first lesson! (worth £3). Good eh? Our lessons are lead by our professional teacher, Joel Chapman who was trained by previous Strictly Come Dancing professionals - so you're in good hands.
Between 3 and 4 we have a free hour set aside for practice. You can put music on and dance routines you've just learned, or use the opportunity to meet new people in Dancesport. Why not get to know our committee? We're friendly, honest!
The fun all takes place for the first time this term in L/N/028 from 12, and it's open to all! If you're a non-student and want to know where L/N/028 is we'll be putting up a map and some directions to it here on the website in the next few days. If you've any concerns or queries, then look at our FAQs here on the website or email us at dancesport@yusu.org and we'll get back to you.
Looking forward to meeting you,
Luke
