F.A.Q.s

How do I join the society?

Just come along to any lesson or practice and you can get membership for the whole year for just £5 - and that includes a free first lesson!

I've never danced before - is that a problem?

No. One of our lessons each week is dedicated to beginners, and gives you an introduction to the dance. For more experienced members, beginners lessons are great to improve technique in basic steps so they're recommended to everyone.

I've danced before - will I fit in?

Yes of course, we welcome dancers who've trained elsewhere and are looking to continue dancing while living in York. Our improvers and advanced lessons will be particually useful for you to continue learning and having fun at the same time.

Do I have to be a member of the university or a York Sport member to join?

No you don't, we welcome non-students to our lessons and you don't need to be a member of YorkSport either.

Do I have to bring a partner with me to take part?

No, you can either come with friends or alone. There's plenty of opportunity to dance with a variety of people and there's nothing wrong with girl-girl couples. If you wish to be in the team and haven't got a partner it's no problem - you can find one either at lessons or practices.

I'd love to come, but I can't make Tuesday nights - are there other opportunities to do so?

Now we have 3 Saturday lessons for those of you who can't make Tuesday nights! This should allow more people the opportunity to come to Dancesport lessons if their Tuesdays are busy.

How can I keep up to date with Dancesport lessons?

To receive regular updates about lessons / socials etc., join our mailing list by clicking the following link. If you join the mailing list and you're still not receiving emails please let one of the committee know and we'll sort it out for you by contacting dancesport@yusu.org. You can also follow us on twitter at www.twitter.com/yorkdancesport or keep an eye on the website and we'll keep you posted.

Do I need to wear special clothing or shoes to join in?

Not at all. We welcome you to dance in whatever you feel comfortable in. Jeans are more than fine, and girls it's up to you if you want to wear heels or not. Because dancing involves a lot of movement it's always best to dance in something that's easy to move in and is comfortable to wear.

How do I know if i'm good enough to come to improvers lessons?

If you feel you're progressing well in beginners lessons, taking part in improvers lessons will keep challenging you in dance and allow you to learn more steps. You may also be interested in joining our team!

Where do you hold lessons?

Our lessons all take place in L/N/028 (Langwith) , and some practices take place in J/Hall (James- old Goodricke). There's a map on our lessons page.
