York Dancesport - Ballroom and Latin Dance Society University of York Ballroom and Latin American Dance Society

Dancesport is a York dance society providing lessons in Ballroom and Latin American dance. Lessons are for students and non-students, taught by Joel Chapman, a professional teacher from the Rock Academy of Dance. The society runs weekly lessons and practice sessions during university term time.

The dances

Dancing Ballroom or Latin is both fun, social and can be a great workout. You can dance for your own enjoyment and to compete at any level (beginners, improvers and advanced). The dances are taught to an international dancesport syllabus, so you'll be getting some great, professional tuition. If you've ever watched Strictly Come Dancing, you'll get the idea!

Ballroom dances are:

• Waltz
• Quickstep
• Foxtrot
• Tango
• Viennese Waltz

Latin American dances are:

• Cha Cha Cha
• Jive
• Samba
• Rumba
• Paso Doble

The society

York Dancesport is a student society part of YUSU at the University of York. Society membership is £4 for the academic year and includes the first lesson free. Membership is open to students and non-students. 

The committee represent the society members, organise lessons, socials and events. In addition, society student members are offered a chance to compete in regional and national university dancesport competitions, including: NUDC, IVDC and Roses (York vs Lancaster).

On campus, we take part in Freshers Fair, York Fusion, Woodstock and run the York Come Dancing charity event in aid of York RAG.

York Dancesport also has a good relationship with local York businesses: the Rock Academy of Dance and the Fancy Dance Shop (Micklegate).

Other societies at York

If you don't fancy Ballroom or Latin, there's a whole range of different dance styles available at York:

• Dancesoc have lessons taught by York students in Tap, Hiphop, Jazz, Street and Salsa.
• York Fusion is a society which puts on charity fashion and dance show which York Dancesport and Dancesoc get involved with.
• There's a few other societies who put on annual shows in Central Hall: Happily Ever After Soc, Gilbert & Sullivan Soc, PantSoc.
• JuggleSoc is all about juggling, balancing and the like. Not really dancing, but they do put on a good show.
